occupational
therapy
Occupational therapy is a health and rehabilitation
profession which emphasizes active participation in tasks
and daily activities to promote independence, quality of life, and
well being. For millions of people, the service of occupational
therapy occurs across the life span. People of all ages receive
Occuaptional Therapy to help them participate in the activities
of their daily lives. Sometimes people need occupational therapy
to do things we take for granted, like getting dressed, playing,
being productive at school or work, eating unassisted, organizing
their behaviours, even socializing.
Occupational therapists achieve this by helping
people overcome their disabilities, medical conditions, or functional
difficulties to do everyday things.
The nature of the therapy depends on the individual
and his/her environment; occupational therapists consider the whole
person when developing a therapy or treatment plan. Occupational
therapists collaborate with physicians and other professionals to
ensure a comprehensive and holistic approach. Occupational therapy
has its roots, more than a century ago, in helping war veterans
return to life at home.
In order to achieve the highest level of independence
occupational therapists use a variety of theories, methods, and
frames of references. The development of the occupational therapy
profession has resulted great level of specialization in many different
areas including:
- - pediatrics
- - physical disabilities
- - mental health
- - hand therapy
- - school based services
- - neonatal intensive care (NICU)
- - sensory integration
