EIST
The Early Intervention Structured Therapy (EIST)
program is a center-based early intervention group program with
support from clinicians in the fields of occupational therapy and
speech and language therapy. Parent education, involvement, and
participation in the activities of the early intervention program
are essential components of the program. Thus, the EIST program's
main components consist not only of clinical time the child spends
playing while working towards achieving specific goals but also
targets the parents as the main agents of nurturing and change.
The EIST program is a program for children who are
at risk for developmental delays, children with identified disorders
(such as cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome, behavioral difficulties,
sensory processing disorders, etc.), for children currently under
diagnostic investigations, and for children who are typically developing.
The EIST program models early intervention programs
in the United States, in particular the TWISPP program. This program
is conducted daily in two of ATS' sister clinics: Therapy West,
Inc. and pLAy Studio in Los Angeles, California. Children in our
program range from 18 months to 4 years of age and are divided according
to specific criteria and developmental profiles on standardized
testing, clinical observations, and parental reports. The emphasis
of EIST is on prevention, early intervention, and enrichment in
a playful and supportive environment.
Because at ATS we believe in the crucial role that
the family plays in the development of the child, parental involvement
is crucial. Parental involvement takes the form of play partners
during the program, attending lectures and seminars, participating
in field trips, identifying target goals in conjunction with clinicians,
and reporting changes to support the aims of the program.
Our program follows a specific progression of activities
known to produce beneficial effects for the child. Thus, our program
is divided in different modules that have different aims and goals.
Although these modules have specific core activities, they allow
flexibility in terms of choices, play companions, level of challenge,
etc., thus capitalizing on the child's intrinsic motivation.
