The curriculum of an education program for
occupational therapists contains many different subjects,
including:
1. Biological, behavioral, and health sciences
2. Structure and function of the human body, including
anatomy, kinesiology, physiology, and neuroscience.
3. Human development throughout the life span
4. Human behavior in the context of sociocultural
systems.
5. Etiology, clinical course, management, and prognosis
of disease processes and traumatic injuries, and the effects of
those conditions on human functioning.
6. Research
7. Health policy and program development
8. Occupational therapy theory, practice, and process including:
8.1 Human performance, that includes occupational
performance throughout the life cycle, human interaction, roles,
values, and the influences of the nonhuman environment.
8.2 Theories underlying the use of purposeful activity
and the meaning and dynamics of activity.
8.3 Performance of selected life tasks and activities.
8.4 Analysis, adaptation, and application of purposeful
activity as therapeutic intervention.
8.5 Use of self, dyadic, and group interaction
8.6 Theoretical approaches, including those related
to purposeful activity, human performance, and adaptation.
9. Application of occupational therapy theory to
practice includes the following:
9.1 Assessment and interpretation, observation,
interviews, history, and standardized and non-standardized tests.
9.2 Directing, planning, and implementation therapeutic
intervention related to daily living skills and occupational components;
therapeutic adaptation, including methods of accomplishing daily
life tasks, environmental adjustments, orthotics, and assistive
devices and equipment; health maintenance, including energy conservation,
joint protection, body mechanics, and positioning; and prevention
programs to foster age-appropriate recommendations to maximize treatment
gains.
9.3 Program termination including reevaluation,
determination of discharge, summary of occupational therapy outcome,
and appropriate recommendations to maximize treatment gains.
